The trailer for Kickstarter funded Insert Coin Documentary has been released and it looks outstanding!
Landing on IGN this past weekend, the documentary will take a look at the rise and fall of iconic arcade manufacturer Midway.
Described in the documentary as the ‘punk rock’ developers of the video game industry, Midway had a string of classic arcade hits between 1973 and 2009. Gaining fame in the west for their licensing of Space Invaders, they would also later acquire a number of high profile rights such as Gauntlet and Defender.
However, Midway’s real ingenuity lay in their in house development. By amping up the sound, graphics and adding lashings of violence, Midway cabinets became a staple in any arcade. Games such as Rampage, NBA jam and Mortal Kombat were genre defining titles that consolidated the companies reputation at the top.
Midway filed for bankruptcy in 2009 after a series of financial catastrophes and borrowings. Their assets were bought off, most famously the Mortal Kombat franchise which moved to Warner Brothers.
The Insert Coin documentary will have its premiere at this years SXSW film festival. Originally a crowd funded project on Kickstarter, the movie raised $92,000 of its $75,000 goal.
